Weekend round-up: Media City goes green, new CBBC Director

Last week was full of Media City related stories - so much so there's a few things you might have missed... (unless you're following us on twitter or facebook of course!)

  • Peel announced that MediaCityUK has become the first development in the world to become a BREEAM approved 'sustainable community'. MediaCity will use water from the Manchester Ship Canal to power, heat and cool the buildings - and will reduce Co2 emissions through the use of a combined heat and power system known as Tri-Gen. (More details on that here.)

The announcement further bolsters Peel's green credentials - they are already involved in a number of environmental businesses, from renewable energy to recycling. (source)

  • The BBC has announced Joe Godwin as the new director of BBC Children's, replacing Richard Deverell, who moves up to be Chief Operating Officer for BBC North at MediaCity. Godwin says, "I can't think of a more exciting challenge, or greater honour, than to lead the brilliant people who make CBeebies and CBBC. The fact that we're soon to become part of BBC North in Salford makes it even more exciting."

  • BBC Radio 5Live Controller Adrian Van Klaveren has written about the station's move North on the 5 live blog - explaining some of the reasons behind the move and his thoughts about MediaCity following a site visit. You can see some pictures from that visit (in particular 5live's new home in 'Building C') in the slideshow below (or here on flickr).

The BBC should have received keys to 'Building C' today (Monday 28th Sept), and we have just a few days until we find out what percentage of remaining BBC staff will decide to make the move to Salford. Place your bets now!

It's great to see MR Godwin is up for the challenge. I think we need more positive people to push green forward. Currently, as a whole, we are struggling. Unfortunately it comes down to money. It's a shame because we could really turn this planet around.

Not a lot of MediaCityUK news to report since the ITV bombshell, except perhaps this article from the FT about the positive impact MediaCityUK is likely to have on Salford and the surrounding areas. The article also provides a quick introduction to the local housing market - useful if you're looking at relocating to Salford. Mar 26, 2009 - 11:04 PM

Debate about the BBC's staff relocation packages continues to rumble on and on - Liz Hunt at the Telegraph says, "I can't be the only taxpayer with northern credentials who feels insulted by the implication that having to up sticks from the South East is akin to an enforced relocation to Mogadishu or Harare." (full article here). Meanwhile, Andy Spinoza at How-Do offers some relocation advice to BBC staff - "Some media people will find the value, community, and friendliness on offer in the likes of Monton and Eccles more appealing than the fancy nick-nack shops of Didsbury..." (full article here). Mar 13, 2009 - 12:22 AM

The Manyoo apartment towers in Salford Quays will be built, despite one of the developers behind it going into administration, reports the MEN. Manyoo will have 1,036 apartments over four towers that will `quite literally change the skyline of Salford Quays'. Mar 04, 2009 - 07:04 AM
